Trapdoor Spider

Description: Medium in size, with a chocolate brown colour, they have round palps at the front of the head between the first pair of legs. 

The Trap door spider generally spends most of its life in its burrow and waits for food to move along burrow for eating. The males are seen searching for female burrows when weather conditions are humid. They are normally found in drier exposed areas and they are normally not aggressive. The female protects its young in the burrow for up to seven months before the juveniles will leave the burrow and make their own miniature burrows. Trap doors are often mistaken for funnel webs because the male trap doors look similar to the male funnel webs and roam around looking for females.

Life Span: 1 to 3 years but maybe longer. 

Toxicity: Non-toxic, but have a painful bite.

Prevention measures

To best control or stop the Trap door spider, a few easy steps can be taken which include: 

• Lowering moisture in areas outside the house.
• Keeping the grass cut short.
• Clean rubbish build up externally.
• Look out for holes in ground or covered holes in the ground.
• Check and wear gloves working outside.
• Wear shoes outside.
