Redback Spider

Description: Small in size, long legs, large abdomen, red stripe on the top of the abdomen. Females are a lot bigger than males.

Redback spiders are normally found under seats and between low lying objects. Female red backs don’t normally move from a location once they are set up unless their webs keep getting destroyed. The webs they spin are extremely strong and have been known to trap mice and small snakes.

The spiderlings can hatch from their egg sac after 11 days (if conditions are good) spending another week inside the egg sac feeding on the nutrients inside. Female red backs lay between 3 to 10 egg sacs in a life cycle with around 250 eggs.  They are found Australia wide. Redback bites have caused death and illness from their bites. Male redbacks do not bite.

Life Span: 1 year.

Toxicity: Extremely Toxic.

Prevention measures

To best control or stop the Redback spider, a few easy steps can be taken which include:

• Lowering moisture in areas outside the house.
• Keeping the grass cut short.
• Clean rubbish build up externally.
• Keep a close eye on children’s play equipment not having webs.
• Check and wear gloves working outside.
• Wear shoes outside.
