Mouse Spider

Description: Medium in size, Brown, males have red cephalothorax (head and body in one), long legs.

Female Mouse spiders are larger, have short legs and reddish hair.

Mouse spider live in holes in the ground which may or may not have lids on them which can go as deep as one metre in length. One good way to tell if it’s a mouse spider burrow is to see a pyramid type soil build up beside where the burrow is.

They get their name mouse spider from the burrows they make in the ground which are confused with mice holes. They are found all around Australia and the females look very similar to the Funnel Web Spider which is misidentified a lot. Their venom is very similar to the funnel webs but nowhere near as toxic.

Life span: of 1 to 5 years.

Toxicity: Toxic.

Prevention measures

To best control or stop the Mouse spider, a few easy steps can be taken which include:

• Lowering moisture in areas outside the house.
• Keeping the grass cut short.
• Clean rubbish build up externally.
• Be cautious when there is heavy rain because they will be out and about.
• Wear shoes outside.
• Check and wear gloves working outside.
