Mosquitoes
Description: very small in size, 3-6mm long, narrow wings, long legs and piercing sucking mouth piece.
Mosquitoes are the deadliest of pests around the world because of the way they can transmit diseases through feeding on people. Some of these include, Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Barmah Forest virus, Ross River virus, and dengue virus. It is proven that the mosquito accounts for more deaths around the world than any other pest, classing them as the deadliest to humans.
They generally breed around natural or artificial fresh water sites where they can lay their eggs on top of the water. They normally hunt at night and most of their diet comes from wild or domesticated animals. This is because they are outdoor pests and hunt majority of the time at night.
Life span: 2 to 3 weeks
Prevention measures
To best control or stop the mosquitoes, a few easy steps can be taken which include:
- Tip out any collected water in pots outside.
- Empty pet bowls of water outside regularly.
- Clear gutters as much as possible to stop water collection.
- Make sure rubbish is tied up and disposed of quickly.
- Install screens on doors or fix screens on doors.
- Keep doors shut at all times.
