Huntsman Spider
Description: Large in size, they are flat with fine hairs, front legs longer than rear legs, is able to move sideways, normally grey with a dark brown strip on top of the abdomen
Huntsman’s often enter houses which are found on walls. They are normally found under damaged bark, rocks, timber and foliage. The huntsmen are also notorious for hiding in cars under the sun visors or running along the dashboard.
The female Huntsman lays around 200 eggs and places it under a rock or bark and guards the eggs for a few weeks. During this period, the female will be very aggressive towards anyone or anything coming near to this area. The huntsman is also a social spider interacting with other species of huntsman.
Life Span: 1-2 year.
Toxicity: Non-Toxic, but bites may be painful.
Prevention measures
To best control or stop the Huntsman spider, a few easy steps can be taken which include:
- Lowering moisture in areas outside the house.
- Keeping the grass cut short.
- Clean rubbish build up externally especially bark.
- Keep a close eye on children’s play equipment not having webs.
- Check and wear gloves working outside.
- Wear shoes outside.
