Funnel Web Spider

Description: Large in size, they are shiny black with reddish hairs, eyes closely grouped together.

The male Funnel web spider is often found moving around in summer and autumn for the purpose of finding a mate. After mating is finished the male is normally eaten by the female. They have a funnel shaped web and the female generally spends majority of its life in the burrow. Male funnel webs are known to enter houses due to wet weather and hide in shoes. Female funnel web spiders normally have around 100 eggs in its egg sac at one time and stay with the eggs until they hatch in the burrow. They normally eat insects but have been known to eat lizards and frogs.

Life Span: 3 to 5 years. 

Toxicity: Extremely Toxic.

Prevention measures

To best control or stop the Sydney funnel web, a few easy steps can be taken which include:

• Lowering moisture in areas outside the house.
• Keeping the grass cut short.
• Clean rubbish build up externally.
• Keep a close eye on children’s play equipment not having webs.
• Check and wear gloves working outside.
• Check and wear shoes outside.
